berkely db4 configure strange

configure does not work any more on solaris:

checking for Berkeley DB in /my/local (as db4)... no
checking for Berkeley DB in /my/local (as db)... no
configure: error: Could not find Berkeley DB 4.0.14 with names: db4 db

but there exists:
/my/local/db4/
/my/local/db40/

do i specify the bdb parameter wrong?
i tried:
 --with-berkeley-db=/my/local/db40

then moved db40 to db4, and retried:
 --with-berkeley-db=/my/local
 --with-berkeley-db=/my/local/db4
