Mmmm .... a patch that exists only as a patch, for people to try out
at will, perhaps. A patch that exists as a branch, likewise (and
probably a better approach, in order to track the trunk). But not in
trunk/. We're really trying to get trunk/ releasable, and neither
the idea of a minimally verified patch (even if it is optional), nor
a minimally verified germ-of-an-idea fits that goal at all.

I'm not at all jazzed, either, about the idea that there would
permanently be a choice of working-copy types. Life's confusing
enough already.
