And I largely agree with your argument, since I have to create a mirror
directory (softlink tree) in order to build Perl from source. For that reason
alone, I will probably try out the feature when it is ready (if you can manage it).

However, I still believe that making the change in order to somehow render
Subversion less threatening to those users who refuse to change their ways is
pointless. You have some very good points why it might be preferrable for
/some/ projects to maintain the admin files outside of the source directory. I
just don't think it is a panacea to help bring the dinosaurs into the present.
Those users will simply ignore the SCM features and someone else will be
required to integrate their code for them.
