The pre-merged file backup is a good point. In fact, I was
thinking about the merge/update behavior myself, but have not
crystallized my thoughts enough to send it to the list.

As for GUIs, I do believe there are other projects that provide
GUI front-ends to SVN. I'm more of a command-line person, but
one reason that I picked SVN was the availability of tools for
graphically-oriented users.
