Dear Subversion team,
we are a department with about 80 developers that has used CVS historically,
but VSS during the latest years. As our strategy today is to make all our
products and therefore development environment cross-OS, I'm following the
development of your product with interest as it seems to be one of the more
viable alternatives to what we have today.
In response to your claim about replacing CVS while eliminating its flaws, I
must say that the 'cvs' directories in the source code branch is one of CVS
great annoyances to us (and to others, I would certainly expect), since it
makes the SCM system very vulnerable to copy-paste type errors and
misunderstandings. In a company with many customer-projects, our developers
often copy-paste something from one project into another. A common happening
is therefore that one or more cvs directories has been copy-pasted also, and
that subsequent cvs commands leads to misunderstandings and sometimes even
percieved loss of data. It was therefore with great sadness that I
discovered that you much like CVS have a .svn directory in the source
directories. You could say that this reflects a lack of self-dicipline, but
I believe that unless an even easier way of doing stuff like that exists,
this is what people do.
As far as I have been able to read, there is no way to configure Subversion
to do otherwise, e.g. place this information in some kind of designated
meta-data directory of a project. We have actually discussed building a
modified CVS with those catalogs relocated to a (configurable) location not
intruding into the source branch, and will have to do the same in order to
consider Subversion an alternative. I frankly do think that an SCM tool
should not be intrusive with regard to the source code modules. Would it be
possible for you or us to add such an option to you otherwise very promising
product ?
Med venlig hilsen/Best regards
