Feature request: file locking

Hi all,

I really like the update/merge model in SVN, but I have a couple of
scenarios where this model simply doesn't work because the file isn't
"mergable" - that is, we have to have the ability to lock a file and unlock
it when done (these files are from a modelling tool - we need to make sure
than only one person is working on a given modelling file at any given
time.)

Currently we are using SourceSafe ONLY because of these modelling files. We
must share them, version them, etc - but can't work concurrently on them.

If Subversion had the ability to optionally lock a file, SourceSafe would be
out the door tomorrow. In fact, I would personally take the SourceSafe CD's
outside and use them as freesbies.

Any chance SVN will get this ability in the future?
