That could work. I think you mean: if the form of a "regular URL" was such that the division between repository and path-within-repository could always be identified, then it would be obvious where to insert a revision number, so the problem is solved. Of course it would be a bit awkward to change the existing URL format now, but, if it were so, would that not be a good solution? If so, we could then discuss whether it would really be worth changing over, and exactly what syntax to use.

This possibly ties in with a long-standing proposal to make the same distinction (between repository and path-within-rpository) in working copy administrative data.
