More subtly: how often do users (humans, scripts) do this sort of
thing _on_repos_they_don't_know?

I think the requirement to find the repo point in a URL automatically
is real, but it's a requirement for "tools like viewcvs or
TortoiseSVN," Users work with the same repos every day; their
primary means of parsing the URL is "hey, Joe, which part of this is
the repository????" And this works just fine in the case at hand ;-)
