The obvious answer is that it makes it more difficult to deal with
filenames that include '@'. There are quite a few files like that on
my system, although none of them under Subversion control.

I'd prefer something more "obscure", something that has less chance of
of being part of a filename. I suspect that identifying such a
pattern is hard.
