OK well Matt's change went in in revision 5692, but Steve says that the
version he has is 5926,
so the autoconf doesn't seem to catch the case we want.

Steve, can you rerun configure, capture STDOUT and STDERR and send the
config.log and the captured console output for examination ?

Does anyone know if he needs to pass any special options to configure ?
--enable-maintainer-mode springs to mind.
