Many thanks for all the suggestions!!

A few responses mentioned permission issues. I don't think that's my
problem since I've been running "chown -R" and "chmod -R" on the
reposititory like a madman, and it doesn't help.

But I think I've got plenty to go on here. Since my main concern is
ongoing problems, the flakey DB 4.0.14 on OSX is good news. I'll
upgrade my svn away from that version of DB. I'll also try the dump and
restore trick my repository really is still readable.
