I agree. There's nothing controversial about supporting all unicode
encodings, but it's just a matter of prioritizing. IMHO, we should
tackle this after 1.0, and tell people to use UTF-8 until then.

Obviously not ideal, but then, life *is* pain, as Westley said in The
Princess Bride.
