svn log with deleted files

is the fact that svn log on a file that's been deleted in HEAD fails a
known problem? i've been trying to run svn log on PORTING (just to see
when it was deleted), and no matter what revision i pass it, i get a 404
error. the closest thing to this that i've seen in the issue tracker is
maybe issue 777, but that's about unversioned files in the working copy,
not URL's to entries that no longer exist in HEAD.
