Well I think it is actually a good idea to give the branch dir +
branching revision. This way no guessing is necessary. In order to
reproduce the release check out the branch at the branch revision and
update. Done.

However, it should be clearly stated that the branch point revision was
meant. How about something like:

Version 0.25.0 (released 09 July 2003, branches/release-0.25.0 starting at r6394)

(Ok, that was not a major contribution, just my revised instructions for
bikeshed remodelling. ;-)
