One thing I'm working on here, and something that is doing very nicely
so far (for our Java projects), is automatic builds.

I've just written a bunch of shell scripts that you can point at
a branch (a branch, a tag or the trunk) and it makes a build,
runs the unit tests, etc. I'm looking at implementing CruiseControl
(cruisecontrol.sourceforge.net) to make them happen extremely
  regularly.

Certainly takes the pain out of making new releases (makes them
almost automatic, I'm thinking of doing a tag-watcher that
just builds new tags when they appear).

Implementing something like this might make it easier to do releases
(how much manual work should there be, other than collating patches
   and updating the changelog?)
