On my machine the LC_* environment variables were set up correctly - it was
the locale library they refered to that was missing. Given that the message
already identifies that the problem is locale related, I reckon an FAQ might
be a better answer.

I don't know enough about the possible output of strace to write it myself,
but you probably need to mention that it may well be necessary to install
strace.
