Responding to my own posting: indeed, if I call the script such that it does not
have a trailing slash, a new repository works fine (i.e. I can import until I
run out of hard-drive for the log files ;~). Doesn't explain why I was able to
commit/checkout for ~50 revisions before the repository got hosed.

I'll keep the old repository around in case anyone (Sleepycat) wants to look at
it. Followups to my address please, since I am dropping off the list for the
moment.
