Is apr absolutely required ?

From: <pll_at_lanminds.com>

I'm trying to install subversion on a Solaris system. This system
may contain local repositories using the file:/// URL but most likely
will access remote repos, probably over ra_svn using ssh. Do I need
apr in this case?

My question stems from the fact that the system in question is not
directly under my control, and I don't want to have to build all this
stuff to live in my homedir (as autoconf/automake and subversion
already do :)

Thanks,
