Irrelevant. The error is from the filesystem, not the disk driver -- and
the filesystem happens to be NTFS in this case, which by all the gods is
supported by Microsoft.

I think it's a race in the filesystem. The fact that you can expose it
by turning on Sophos' intercheck seems to confirm that -- it changes the
timings just enough for the problem to show up, when it wouldn't in a
"normal" test case.
