That does appear to have fixed it.

I guess I have two questions now:

1) Are the current defaults reasonable?

2) Could the error message be made more helpful? For instance,
   "Couldn't acquire a lock; see db/DB_CONFIG" rather than "Couldn't
   allocate memory"
