It *should* be like --depth 1, but it isn't always; sometimes it acts
like --depth 0, which is confusing, to say the least.

Whoever gets in a patch for --depth 0,1,infinite (and all the
refactoring that implies) gets a big wet kiss from me. Or I could
procure a reasonable facsimile of the female persuasion, since that's
likely to get a more positive reaction in these parts. :-)
