I would not say that subversion is alpha if you look
at the stability. It's only marked 'alpha' because
there might still be some changes to the API and
not because it's not stable enough.

Just take a look at the members with developer
status on the project page - there are many many
developers, some project owners and uncountable
observers which not only have a great interest in
subversion but also send in patches and ideas.
Also, the source code is well organized so even
in the (almost) impossible case where all the
current developers would stop working it won't
be a problem for new developers to start where
they left. I've seen other projects where that
just wasn't possible because the source was
a big mess.
