tags in subversion

I have some doubts I would like to get some feedback about using tags.
1) I understand that in subversion a tag (or branch) is a copy by reference
of a virtual directory in the repository. Is there a way for a user to know
from what directory-version a tag/branch/copy was copied?
2) CVS does know the difference between a tag or branch. I was thinking in
using a property to distinguish between a plain directory and a tag/branch
one. This way a client could recognize automatically which directories are
tags or branchs and draw them differently. I would like to hear comments on
this approach.
