*.so files

Hi,

can someone please explain me what those
*.so files in the \iconv\ subfolder (windows installation)
are for?
I know they're part of the apr-iconv package but
I couldn't find any docs about what they are or
if Subversion really needs them.
It's just that I built my own client without those
files and it worked without complaining about
missing files...

I'd be happy if someone could explain me if
they're essential or not for Subversion since those
would add about 3 Megs to my installer...
