For software we write, we only put real source data under version
control.

For external software we import (lots of GNOME stuff, among other
things), we have to import the derived stuff. The alternative is
conforming to a vast collection of developer tool requirements, where
some of the tools only run on Linux and some of the requirements are
contradictory.
