As someone who has had his home directory in CVS for years, I think I
understand what you're getting at.

Just check it out to ~/tmp, then move it into place.

I occasionally run into this problem when updating my ~/.ssh directory
on machines that access my CVS repository via ssh, so you get used to
the 'copy it somewhere else, then move it into place' paradigm.
