So how are absent checksums handled without a dump/load? Are they
computed and add to the repository when a new commit modifies a file
  or directory?

If absent, they are omitted from the dump. But since the FS is always
calculating them when new contents are added, all loads get the
 checksums for free.

OK.

Is it a good idea to dump/load the repository just to get the
checksums into there for all files?

I can't tell your tone of voice. Are you asking that with one
raised eyebrow and a readied rebuttal?

Not at all.

Or are you just asking if, in
my opinion, I think all repos admins just dump/load? :-)

Not that either :)

My advice to admins would be to dump/load if they want all their
storage checksummed, not just the mods that occur after the upgrade to
0.17. If they don't care that much, they can just wait until a
dump/load is necessary (schema change, or whatever).

OK. That makes it clear. So it's a good idea to do just to get
all the checksums in there.

Thanks,
Blair
