But you don't have to run autogen.sh if you're building from a tarball.
Runing autogen.sh is only necessary for developers. I thought that was
documented in INSTALL? If it's not, a patch to document it would be

You aren't in the package management business, you are in the getting it as
simple as possible to install Subversion business.

As simple as possible can cover a multitude of sins. :-)
Comparing our INSTALL documentation with similar docs for other
packages, I think we're doing pretty well.

I know that you could
eventually provide lots of precompiled binaries for every known platform,
but until you reach that stage, you need to make it possible for everyone to
build and install SVN.

Would you be willing to create such an all-in-one tarball? If you do, it
should be no problem to get it uploaded to the file sharing area on
subversion.tigris.org. But I don't think you can expect someone else to
do it for you; remember, every single binary package you see there was
made by a volunteer.
