Change status, and possibly some other commands (I'd need to review them
to see which ones it made sense for) so that if a filename that refers
to a directory is provided on the command line, its contents are not
operated on if the command would not normally recurse into directories
given the options present.
If no file arguments are provided at all, and the command would normally
have an implicit argument of the current directory, that directory and
all of its contents will be operated on.
Is that enough detail?
I think that is the correct way to implement it in terms of
recursive/non-recursive, but do you also have a plan for
--depth=[0|1|infinity] ?
