I concur with Greg. There are many solutions to many different
problems that all require repository GUIDs. But I'd really like to
see these problems and solutions nicely enumerated in a design
document, before we start writing any code.

mbk and rassilon: would it be too much to ask you guys to write
something up and commit it to notes/? It can live right next to our
humongous locking proposal. :-)

I feel like this discussion is moving in confusing circles... we need
a concrete design to debate about.
