the patches in those two pr's are fine, but should probably be updated
for 0.14.4 (once it's configure issues are resolved and it's rerolled).

if you want to commit them now, feel free, since it may be a day or so
before i get a chance to update to the new version (and we may require
an updated apr port, i'm not sure).
