after trying some other things thats what i did. i now have apache/apr cvs,
and subversion svn co installed into /usr/local, along with a system bdb
4.0.14 in /usr.

after a bit more waving of rabbit feet, rebuilding, and playing with ldd and
environment variables everything worked, i'm forced to conclude that my
issues were operator error.
