Yes - I agree with you on this. The best solution would be client-side
hooks, but these hooks cannot depend on launching other programs or
scripts to do their job. These hooks should be provided by plugins
which provide handling for a certain selection of files. And ofcourse
one plugin would be a plugin that uses external scripts to do
additional stuff.

But this all is a huge load to implement. I certainly will not have
time for it, not before 1.0. On the other hand, I believe that
especially symlink storage is an issue which is important to people -
so I'm trying to figure out a way which would be as clean as possible,
as easy to implement as possible and doable before 1.0.
