autogen.sh error

I'm an extreme newbie to autoconf so the following may
be something really dumb I'm doing.

I get the following:
> autoconf --version
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.54

1996, (ok)
cd: can't cd to /bin/../share/aclocal
/home/nyap/proj/oss/subversion/libtool.m4 not found

What do I need to do (hopefully short of being root)
to get this step to work?
