One thing that I've always loved about Subversion is its mission
statement. It's short, simple, and you could even print it on the back
of a business card:

          The goal of the Subversion project is to build a
       version control system that is a compelling replacement
               for CVS in the open source community.
     

Its on the front page of the Subversion website, in fact.

You may note that it mentions *nothing* about BitKeeper, arch, or even
developing a perfect version control system.
