Al Viro has a number of strongly held beliefs which are (IMO) more
subject to debate than he makes them sound. One of these would be
that binary storage formats are Evil. As such, it is possible that
his entire problem is with the BDB back end.

The quoted message sounds like he's got more of a style and/or coding
practices beef, though. I am not sure what he's objecting to if so.
I'm not intimately familiar with the Subversion code but I can find
the implementation of any given operation and comprehend how it works
once I've found it, which means you all are already doing a lot better
than many projects I've hacked.

It might be worth contacting him privately and politely to ask him to
explain what he didn't like. (Please do not attach my name to any
such request.)
