If I see an editor that does "unlink/open/write" I think I'll stay clear
of that editor (and if emacs does that, maybe it's why I have steered
clear of it).

By respecting hardlinks, it should retain them.

Not to mention that not everything is modified by an editor. PDF's
aren't. MS Word docs aren't (well, it's a word processor, not an
editor). You get the idea. We can't rely on something like that.
