On a related note: I suppose it's time to clean up the error message
mess. What I'd like to do first is rip out all references to function
names in the error messages. Developers get the exact error location in
an --enable-maintainer-mode build. Non-developers don't want to know
about the function names. I'd like to open an issue about that.

Whoever fixes the messages will probably find all sorts of
inconsistencies in the way we report problems, and should note such
kinks in the issue.

Does that seem like a sane approach?
