repository permissions - some general security questions

Ok, now that subversion is alpha I am seriously looking at setting it up
for some experiments. My main concern right now is security. Read/Write
user permissions, and doing everything through ssl is documented, and
should work fine.

My problem is with the repository filesystem itself. The README advises to
chmod 777 which give +rw to anything on the system. This is clearly a big
hole, and blocker in my case. I want to have at least rw restricted to a
specific group.

I didn't find anything in the docs about this .. anyone care to shed some
light?
