Thanks for the clues. I'm compiling this on RedHat 7.3 which has
automake-1.5-2, autoconf253-2.53-3, libtool-1.4.2-7.

Does that give any clue? I need to retry on my original RedHat 7.2 system
and see what happens. It very well could be a funky auto* tool or
something. It wouldn't suprize me. :-)
