Actually, IIRC you can turn the 8.3 (storing the short name) support off
in NTFS. You should never have to use a short name in order to get
things to work on any modern NT-based system.

From a users perspective, we're certainly being nice to our users if we
notice and handle when we need to quote appropriate paths. Make things
easy to use, our customers will love us even more.
