Or just skip all this junk, and say $EDITOR is the name of a single
program, period, no arguments. If you want arguments, use a script.

I suppose this would make certain values of $EDITOR fail that work on
other platforms, but in actuality depending on behavior of spaces
anywhere in Unix is bound to fail somewhere, so it's best to shunt it
to an environment the user can control (ie, their shell script).
