Seriously, it used to be the standard but has long since been supplanted
with a single period, thanks in large part to proportionally-spaced fonts.
In fact, if your HTML has two spaces after a period it will still be shown
as a single space by any browser (as a "feature" of HTML parsing). I know
that I have become habituated to putting in only one space.

However, since plain text files are almost certainly displayed fixed width,
it makes a lot of sense to go back to that old standard for all our
documentation. How many use a text editor with a proportionally spaced
font? Or an xterm? So the rule makes sense, but I don't think you could say
it was obvious. Not to me, anyway.
