I'm not set up on newton, and I doubt I'm set up on whatever that other one
is. No way for me to directly check that.

Woah... exactly.
You've got some serious wonkiness in there. Is your apr-util up to date? Did
you "make extraclean" and then run autogen?
I'll ensure that I'm up to date and try to repro the above.
Also note that it *did* find an Expat header in /usr/local. As a result, it
selects it. APRUTIL does *not* verify that a library is also present. So...
it sounds like you have a header in /usr/local/include, but no corresponding
library.
