Okay, so I decided to upgrade myself to the latest and greatest...
With todays httpd-2.0, apr, apr-util, subversion, db-4.0.14 and
neon-0.18.4 (need to adjust buildcheck.sh for that) it works like
a charm.
The only thing I didn't get right away was upgrading my db3 to
db4 environment, but I found that in the archive. I'll quote it
here again:

Quick tip for people who have repositories lying around. After
installing db4 on your system, you'll need to upgrade them as well:
db_recover -h /path/to/svn/repo/db -ve
db_upgrade -h /path/to/svn/repo/db nodes representations revisions \
strings transactions
