What was wrong with apxs? It would be "Best" if we could continue to use
APXS rather than manual installation.

If you could explain the problem, then maybe we could get apxs fixed. Or
maybe add a switch to apxs or somesuch...

Is this related to the "relink the .so" thing you mentioned? i.e. the .so
would then appear to be changed from what the RPM installed?
