-1 for leaving newline conversion out:

An example, we do most of our perl coding on windows... when we check it out
on Unix, if there is no EOL conversion, mod_perl barfs.

Another example, we are going to be using Kylix on Linux... We have
libraries that we need to compile on both Windows and Linux, but different
version of Delphi (we use Delphi 1 (16 bit) and Delphi 5 (23 bit)) handle LF
with differing levels of badness.

There are other examples too long to post here.

If it was left out, I would more than likely not move to Subversion, the
pain would be too great.

+1 for having it off by default and having it as a module/directory/file
option.

PS: Notepad on NT 4 and up handles file sizes up to available memory, but
still doesn't handle LF... :-)
