Subversion is quite usable for daily things, even though it's not yet
in Alpha release. The Subversion project itself has been using
Subversion for 3 months.

However, I'm not sure what sort of 'binary' problems you're having.
As far as I know, Microsoft Word files aren't things that can be
automatically merged (although I've heard a rumor that MS has a tool
for doing this.) Subversion, like CVS, uses the unix 'diff/patch'
tools to do contextual line-based merges. This technique only works
on text files. If two binary files need to be merged, Subversion
simply places them side-by-side and lets the user deal with them.

Hope this helps.
