This is NTL's transparent proxy server not being HTTP-compliant. Try:

$ svn co http://svn.collab.net:81/repos/svn/trunk -d subversion

to bypass the proxy. (NTL have upgraded the proxy in my region to be
SVNCompliant(TM), but it seems not all regions yet)
