Oh, I think Greg is agreeing that one should be *able* to get the byte
count (the totally machine-parseable output, that is). The question
is should it appear in the default output, which is human-oriented.

My feeling is, avoiding yet another option is worth a little extra
complexity in the default format. But if a lot of people are thrown
by that byte count, then that would be bad, too.
